Agriculture and Horticultural Studies - UNIT 1&2
Within this subject, you will develop an understanding of Australia's agricultural and horticultural industries and research the opportunities and practical realities of working in the sector. You will consider sources of food and fibre indigenous to Victoria prior to European settlement, and research plant and animal nutrition, growth, and reproduction. You will develop an understanding of the conditions in which plants and animals grow and reproduce, and related issues and challenges. You will also evaluate the effectiveness and sustainability of agricultural or horticultural practices, and investigate the structure, function, nutrition, and growth of plants, and undertake practical tasks relating to the growth and management of plants and animals.
Agriculture and Horticultural Studies - UNIT 3&4
Within this subject, you will examine the role of research and data, innovation, and technology in Australia's food and fibre industries, looking at practices that mitigate risk and protect the viability of these industries. Emphasis is placed on the importance of biosecurity; the protection of agricultural and horticultural industries against pests, diseases, and weeds; and measures to combat the serious threat posed by biological resistances. You will examine sustainability in terms of land management and its role in various industries, and research the effects of climate change on food and fibre production through case studies of effective responses to this and other environmental challenges.
Ewe Groot
Ewe Beauty' isn't just an important part of the Australian lingo but is also an exciting project within this subject in which you will develop an understanding of the Australian sheep industry through a range of practical and class-based activities. In the second part of this subject, 'I am Groot', you will develop your understanding of plant structures and reproduction as you engage in the process of plant propagation and also investigate the importance of biodiversity in maintaining sustainable agricultural systems.
Harvest - Maths in Action!
This is a hands-on Agriculture course where you grow, harvest and sell fresh fruit and vegetables from the school patch, and learn all about caring for our chooks and farm. You will help run markets, manage produce and solve real problems connected to the farm, while also learning practical skills, using equipment, working outside and organising your work with digital tools. You will get to practice your Maths in real situations by measuring, collecting and recording data, and using numbers like decimals and percentages to make decisions. Along the way, you will investigate ideas, test solutions and build a portfolio of your work, and take heaps of fresh fruits and veggies home.
Mooving on up
Catering for all dietary preferences, this subject will focus on both plant and animal systems and take you on a journey through the Australian cattle industry and the practices and processes that turn plain old grass into some of the best tasting steak in the world. You will investigate the sustainable and ethical production of cattle and the management of pasture systems to optimise growth and minimise the footprint of agriculture on the natural environment.
The Circle of Life
The Circle of Life will take you on a journey through the secret life of plants and scramble your brain as you explore the science behind chook growth and development. You'll get hands on experiences: hand raising one day old chicks to fully grown chooks and managing the Salesian College vineyard. You'll develop an understanding of plant and chicken anatomy and nutrition and learn how a range of environmental factors impact the production of food in Victoria.
