From greetings to grammar, you'll grow confident in using a visual language and engaging respectfully with the Deaf community. This RUAH will be graded and shown on your report. Biology
In Focus Biology you will delve deeper into the science of living organisms. You will learn about the features of cells from the different kingdoms and the adaptations they have to aid in the survival of the organism. You will study DNA and learn about why it is so important in survival. You will then apply your understand of DNA to genetics and evaluate the evidence for scientific theories that explain the transmission of heritable characteristics from one generation to the next. To do this you will learn how to analyse and interpret inheritance patterns and pedigrees and predict the outcome of genetic crosses. The theory of evolution by natural selection will also be a focus, where you will discover how this explains the diversity of living things and is supported by a range of scientific evidence.

Darkness, Chaos, and Order
In this subject, you will have the opportunity to explore various ancient creation stories from different cultures around the world. The focus will be on understanding the purpose behind these stories and identifying their similarities and differences. The subject will then move on to examining the Christian creation story found in the Book of Genesis, along with the Enuma Elish and the Babylonian Creation Story, which share similarities with it. You will delve into questions such as why there are two creation stories in the Bible, the significance of God saying 'it was good' after each day of creation, and whether these stories oppose the Big Bang Theory. The aim is to gain a deeper understanding of our existence today and the various perspectives and beliefs surrounding it.
Debating
Students will develop their interpersonal and public speaking skills to respond to a given topic and debate against another team. Students participate in the DAV Schools Debating competition held at St Bernard's College where they will debate in teams against other secondary schools in the district. This competition involves 5 rounds of debating throughout the semester (usually once every 5-7 weeks) which is held Monday night at 7 or 8pm. Students who select RUAH: Debating are expected to commit to be available for at least 4 of the 5 debate nights.

In Epic Theatre, you will concentrate on the drama studies centered around the work of theatre practitioner, Bertolt Brecht. Environmental Science
In Focus Environmental Science there is a focus on human impact on the environment, particularly the sources and impacts of pollution in the atmosphere (air), hydrosphere (water), and biosphere (living organisms). You will learn about the structure and components of these spheres and study pollution issues at local and global levels. The course includes a study of the importance of maintaining a diversity of living things on Earth. You will research how pollution can lead to declines of particular species. This course allows you to develop skills in field techniques. There is a large practical component completed in our school grounds and on local excursions. We practise environmental data collection techniques that include collecting and testing water samples, measuring air quality, counting and classifying living organisms, and monitoring local weather and climate using our Salesian Weather Station. This will help you develop skills in data analysis and communication.

In this subject, you will delve into the life and teachings of Jesus Christ, as depicted in the four Gospel accounts. FAME - Foundations of Art Making & Exhibiting
If there was one word to sum up art, it would be individuality! Art allows you to explore imagery and art forms that interest you as an individual. Projects include conceptual portraits and appropriation using sculpture to create original interpretations of famous artworks, with options for an individual choice extension project. You will conduct medium trials and evaluate their results in annotations. You will examine artworks from a range of historical, contemporary and cultural contexts including First Nations artists. You will curate an exhibition, considering the choices of art display. Art at this level is an excellent introduction to VCE Art Making and Exhibiting and careers in art, design, and creative industries.
Film and Photography (Media)
Have you ever wanted to create an amazing photograph, produce a short film, or experiment with animation? In this hands-on course, you will step into the role of creator, photographer and filmmaker. This subject equips students with fundamental first aid knowledge and practical skills to respond effectively in emergency situations. First Nations Immersion (Community Service)
During the immersion, students learn about the rich culture of the land directly from its custodians and contribute to community projects chosen and guided by Traditional Owners. Whether they are hiking to sacred sites, throwing a fishing line in the creek, kicking a footy with local kids, or sharing stories around the campfire, the goal is always to facilitate personal connections and allow students to develop a first-hand understanding of the challenges and beauty of modern life in remote Indigenous communities. This includes topics such as women in football, social media, and the inclusion of minority groups, such as different ability groups. Football Codes (Women's)
In this subject, you will advance your skills in AFL, soccer, Gaelic, and rugby codes. You will have the opportunity to develop and facilitate your own training leading up to match day performances. In addition to honing your skills, you will explore specific sports ethics and social issues that affect these sports. This includes topics such as women in football, social media, and the inclusion of minority groups, such as different ability groups. By the end of the course, you will be able to understand and navigate the complexities of these sports and their impact on society. With a rise in popularity of women's football code sports, we are excited to offer this subject to create space for women to develop skills across a range of codes. (Students may choose only ONE of the Football Codes subjects.)
Foundation Maths - Units 1&2
Unit 1 & 2 Foundation Mathematics is designed to build essential mathematical skills for everyday life, work, and further study. Friends of the RSL (Community Service)
Step into a story bigger than yourself and discover the people, history, and community spirit behind the RSL. In this RUAH, you'll explore what the RSL is, the role it plays, and why it matters to so many Australians today. You'll meet local veterans, hear their lived experiences, visit the Sunbury RSL, and learn how the organisation supports service members and the wider community. Along the way, you'll work together on a meaningful service project - something practical that gives back and strengthens your connection to the community. This is a space for asking questions, listening deeply, helping others, and understanding the importance of respect, remembrance, and service in everyday life.
G'day: Australian Identity Over Time
In this subject you will explore how ideas about Australian identity have changed over time and how these ideas impact the way we see ourselves and the way others see us. You will investigate media texts, including television programs, and how they have depicted Australian stereotypes over time. You will meet Kenny the classic "Aussie Battler" as he heroically supplies portable toilets to events across Victoria against all odds. You will connect your own experiences of growing up in Australia with personal stories from a range of diverse Australians.
General Maths - Units 1&2
In General Mathematics Units 1 and 2, you will apply a range of mathematical techniques and processes involving rational and real arithmetic, sets, lists, tables, matrices, diagrams, networks and geometric constructions. You will work with algorithms, algebraic manipulation, recurrence relations, equations and graphs, both with and without the use of technology. You will develop confidence in mental and by-hand methods for estimation and computation. CAS technology will be used and assessed throughout the course for numerical, graphical, symbolic, statistical and financial applications related to these topics.
General Maths - Units 3&4
General Maths Units 3 and 4 focuses on real-life application of mathematics and consists of two areas of study: 'Data analysis, probability, and statistics' and 'Discrete mathematics'. You will apply techniques and routines in the topics of Data Analysis, Finance and Recursion, Matrices, and Network Analysis. The use of CAS technology for numerical, graphical, symbolic statistical and financial applications for these topics will be incorporated and assessed.
Geography - Unit 1&2
This subject covers hazards and tourism. You will learn about different types of hazards such as geological, hydro-meteorological, biological, and technological hazards, their causes, impacts, and human responses. You will also study the characteristics of tourism, its various forms, impacts on people, places, and environments, and contrasting examples from within Australia and other parts of the world. One tourism location is studied in detail using fieldwork techniques and information sources such as statistical data, digital images, streamed video, and maps.
Geography - Unit 3&4
The study of geography is a structured way of exploring, analysing, and understanding the characteristics of places that make up our world. Geographers are interested in key questions concerning places and geographic phenomena: What is there? Where is it? Why is it there? What are the effects of it being there? How is it changing over time and how could, and should, it change in the future? How is it different from other places and phenomena? How are places and phenomena connected?
Ghost Stories
I had never seen a ghost. But like they say, there is a first time for everything... Scary stories have been told for centuries, dating all the way back to ancient culture. In this subject you will look at the origins of ghost stories, how different cultures tell their ghost stories and how to create a ghost story. This subject combines writing, language, and history into things that go bump in the night. Boo!
Harvest - Maths in Action!
This is a hands-on Agriculture course where you grow, harvest and sell fresh fruit and vegetables from the school patch, and learn all about caring for our chooks and farm. You will help run markets, manage produce and solve real problems connected to the farm, while also learning practical skills, using equipment, working outside and organising your work with digital tools. You will get to practice your Maths in real situations by measuring, collecting and recording data, and using numbers like decimals and percentages to make decisions. Along the way, you will investigate ideas, test solutions and build a portfolio of your work, and take heaps of fresh fruits and veggies home.
Health
In this subject, you will have the opportunity to learn through both theory and practical components. Through the practical component, you will participate in a range of leisure and team-based activities, which will help keep your body active. In the theory component, you will learn about various dimensions of health, human development, nutrition, healthcare issues in Australia, and the healthcare system. This subject serves as an excellent precursor to VCE Health and Human Development.
Health and Human Development - Units 1&2
In VCE Health and Human Development, you will learn about the broad concepts of health and wellbeing beyond the individual level. Health and Human Development - Units 3&4
Unit 3 of VCE Health and Human Development explores health and wellbeing as a global concept, focusing on the fundamental conditions required for health improvement and evaluating successful health programs. Unit 4 examines health and wellbeing, human development, and health inequalities in a global context, including factors contributing to disparities and global trends like climate change and digital technologies. You will analyse global action to improve health through the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals, World Health Organization, and Australia's overseas aid program. You will learn to evaluate the effectiveness of health initiatives and reflect on your own capacity to take action.

Heartfelt Helpers (Community Service)
This subject is a combination of three RUAHs - Food Bank, St. Vinnies and Soup Kitchen. You will be at the forefront of local change in our community, completing empowering community service, setting up and working with organisations such as St. Vincent de Paul Society and CareWorks Sunbury. You will manage inventory, organise food drives, provide assistance and organise student-led bake sales. This will help our school to directly address the food insecurity in our local community, develop empathy, teamwork, communication and compassion in ourselves and others. Be the catalyst for positive change and experience the power of initiatives driven by you.

What did Hercules do with all those slain Hydra heads? And how much truth is there in all those daring exploits of heroes through the ages, from love and loss to clashes with nature and encounters with supernatural beings? The mythical stories of our cultures still hold a deep grip on our imagination today, for example, through the appeal of what it means to be a hero. You will dive into these questions and more through myths and legends across cultures and their modern adaptations, and then write your own part of the story...

Throughout human history, we have fought bravely, loved fiercely, uplifted culture to the greatest heights, and yet wrought destruction that's caused us to re-question what it means to be human. And through it all, authors have written fiction and nonfiction about it, so we can relive it. Let's step into the shoes of those who've journeyed in our past, those who walked through the Holocaust, and other moments big and small. You will learn how best to bring the past to life through studying texts, and create your own tales of the past.
History - Revolutions - Unit 3&4
Engage in a dynamic study of two world changing revolutions in America 1776 and in Russia 1917 that have shaped two of the modern superpowers of the 20th and 21st Century. Revolutions History examines the causes of the Revolutions such as ideological motivations, Leaders, Economic and Social Factors along with the power of movements in the removal of the Old Regimes. Students then analyse the consequences of the Revolution with a focus on leaders and the establishment of new nations such as the United States of America and the Soviet Union.

Here's the chance to design your dream house! You may prefer to design an island getaway for a celebrity or even a space station or sports stadium! Interior and exterior spaces are all around us and impact the way we live, and how we work, play, and feel. You will discover unique design careers and how design has changed over time, learn colour psychology, and apply your creative ideas to your projects. Using a design process, you will learn manual and digital drawing methods as well as model making. You will present your "Interior Design" project in a 'lookbook' or website. You will also consider design for the benefit of individuals and communities in both indoor and outside spaces in the "Shelter Me" project, investigating the importance and design of emergency shelters.

L'Avventura Italiana (The Italian Adventure)
Students have the option to pursue either the VET Certificate II in Applied Language (Italian) or L'Avventura Italiana, a semester-long course available in both Semester 1 and Semester 2. Both pathways lead to Year 10 Italian studies. To enroll in either course, students must have completed at least one semester at the Explore level. Embark on an exciting Italian adventure! This semester-long course builds language skills through real-life scenarios like planning a trip, booking accommodation, and exploring Italian cities. Students will engage in roleplays, film analysis, and cultural studies, expanding their vocabulary and grammar knowledge, including modal verbs and the passato prossimo (past tense). In Term 2, the focus shifts to history and the arts, exploring Ancient Rome and Renaissance masters like Da Vinci and Michelangelo.
La Dolce Vita
In this subject, you will embark on a virtual Vespa tour to experience and explore the sweet life, or 'La Dolce Vita', in Italy. Legal Studies - Unit 1&2
In VCE Legal Studies, you will learn about Australia's legal system, including the rule of law, key legal institutions, and the justice system. You will explore criminal and civil law, analysing actual or hypothetical scenarios to determine guilt or liability. You will also examine recent criminal and civil cases to evaluate the effectiveness of sanctions and remedies in achieving justice. Conventional fuels are polluting the environment and will also eventually run out, so the push to move to renewable green energy sources is increasing. In this project you will investigate these energy alternatives and potential future solutions. As you build your understanding of energy and how it is transferred, you will be tasked with designing an energy efficient house and developing plans and suggestions to support the wider Sunbury community in the move to green energy.

Love the spotlight? Take centre stage with the College Production RUAH! This exciting semester-long subject gives students the opportunity to rehearse, refine, and perform in the annual College Production, which is shared with the Salesian community in Term 3. The Production alternates each year between a Musical Theatre production and a College play, offering a dynamic and immersive performance experience. Students who select this subject will develop skills in acting, choreography, blocking, and singing, all while collaborating with a talented cast to bring a show to life. Psychology
In Focus Psychology, you will study a variety of areas that provide grounding for VCE Psychology. You will consider Psychology as a Science and investigate the various types of observation and reporting techniques used, as well as learning about ethical considerations through case studies. You will study the role of the brain in controlling an individual's behaviour, memory, and cognitive skills, and the particular structural and functional role of the lobes of the cerebral cortex, including during sleep and dreaming.
Psychology - Unit 1 & 2
Psychology studies mental processes and behavior using biological, behavioral, cognitive, and socio-cultural perspectives. Unit 1 explores the complexity of psychological development and its contribution to psychological models and theories, including brain structure and function. Unit 2 evaluates the role of social cognition and the influence of internal and external factors on behavior and mental processes, considering different cultural experiences and values, including those of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Psychology - Unit 3 & 4
Psychology is the scientific study of human mental processes and behavior, using biological, behavioral, cognitive, and socio-cultural perspectives. This unit examines the nervous system and how biological, psychological, and social factors impact learning and memory. It also explores the importance of sleep and its effect on mental wellbeing, including the regulation of sleep, REM and NREM sleep, and the impact of changes in sleep hygiene on psychological functioning. Classical and contemporary research is used to explain these concepts.
Reach Maths (Elective Semester 2)
This extension course is designed for Year 10 students undertaking Introduction to Mathematical Methods and serves as a prerequisite for Unit 1 Specialist Mathematics. It aligns with the Victorian Curriculum 2.0 (Level 10A) and extends learning in key areas including Number and Algebra, and Functions and Relations. Students will explore advanced concepts such as estimation, laws of indices (including rational indices), surds, logarithms and exponentials, polynomials, partial fractions, and circular functions. Through rigorous problem-solving and real-world applications, students will develop a deep understanding of these topics while strengthening their analytical and critical thinking skills. The content covered in this course is considered assumed knowledge for Units 1 and 2 Specialist Mathematics and will not be retaught in those subjects. Note: This subject must be taken in addition to Introduction to Mathematical Methods (Focus).
Recreation
In this subject, you will explore and participate in a variety of recreational activities with a focus on personal health and wellbeing. The activities will include yoga, bike riding, self-defence, and other similar activities that do not have a strong competitive element. Through this exploration, you will learn about the benefits of recreational activities and how they contribute to individual and societal health. You will also be encouraged to step outside of your comfort zone to challenge yourself and develop new skills. Additionally, you will learn about community-based recreational activities and their role in promoting physical activity and social connection.

The study of VCE Religion and Society is a broad overview of religion and its interaction with society in the past and the present. You will study religious traditions or religious denominations in societies where multiple worldviews coexist and consider the experiences of those members who engage with their religious tradition individually and communally. This study respects and encourages an open and objective inquiry. Units 1&2 provide an opportunity for you to gain an understanding of the complex relationships that exist between individuals, groups, new ideas, and religious traditions, as well as the ethical and moral implications for living in a contemporary pluralistic society.

This subject explores the concept of freedom and the inequalities experienced by different groups across history. Students investigate the International and Australian Civil Rights Movements, analysing first-hand accounts, segregation and the lived experiences of minority groups to understand struggles for rights and equality. The course also examines Melbourne in a globalising world, tracing the city's development through periods of boom and bust, war, migration and political change. Topics include Melbourne during World War II and the Cold War, the impact of migration on the city's identity, and movements for political reform in Australia. Texts and Traditions - Unit 1 & 2
The study of VCE Texts and Traditions considers the place and meaning of sacred texts within their religious traditions and wider social contexts. In Units 1&2, you will examine the place of sacred texts and their literary forms within a religious tradition. You will explore the importance of sacred texts as the source of a tradition and learn how to interpret and describe their meaning for the earlier and continuing tradition. You will also study how sacred texts provide a means of investigating contemporary social attitudes and issues, and how messages contained in them may justify or support the prevailing norms.
Texts and Traditions - Unit 3 & 4
The study of VCE Texts and Traditions considers the place and meaning of sacred texts within their religious traditions. In Units 3&4, you will engage with the exegetical analysis (analytical interpretation) of the chosen texts. Some of the themes contained in the texts have been reinterpreted at different times by the religious tradition. In this unit, you will study a significant theme contained in the set text and consider the interpretation of the text in light of the theme. You will develop an understanding of the historical background that influenced the texts themselves in light of these interpretations.
The Circle of Life
The Circle of Life will take you on a journey through the secret life of plants and scramble your brain as you explore the science behind chook growth and development. You'll get hands on experiences: hand raising one day old chicks to fully grown chooks and managing the Salesian College vineyard. Our core text, In Cold Blood by Truman Capote, is one of the most famous true crime books of all time - a chilling, real-life murder case written like a novel. You'll explore how writers turn facts into compelling narratives, dissect media portrayals of crime, and examine why we're so drawn to these shocking stories. Then, you'll have a chance to apply this to your own product, researching crimes and becoming your own journalist - write, produce, and press record on your own True Crime journey.
